The Brand name 'Chippendale' covered the creations [furniture and crockery] produced in the plant founded by Thomas Chippendale, the elder (June 5, 1718–November 1779), in Otley, West Yorkshire.
Thomas Chippendale went to London in 1754, where he became the first cabinet maker to publish a book of his designs, entitled 'Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Director'. Three editions were published, in 1754, 1755 and 1762.
Chippendale designs became very popular during the middle to late 19th century and he gave his name to a certain style - which successfully incorporated Gothic, Irish, and even Chinese motifs.
