Has anyone else noticed that misandry and misogyny tend to go hand-in-hand?
To give one of many examples, the same people who believe that women should not play sports or hold jobs also tend to believe that men should put women up on pedestals and hold doors for them.
Does anyone else think that double standards tend to support each other like beams of a house, and that people who hold misogynist double standards also tend to hold misandrist ones and vice-versa?
I think that what you're talking about is this: Sexist lines of thought tend to be harmful. Period. Not just to women, not just to men. Harmful in general.
Think about the guy a couple months ago who was at a party (in Georgia, U.S.) where a girl bumped into him. He was chivalrous--a perverse kind of chivalrous. He was mad that she bumped into him, but he couldn't hit a girl--he had been told not to. Instead, he told her that he would beat up the next male that he saw, and that it would be her fault. The next male he saw was small and unprepared, and was beaten to death. That's sexism. That's an extreme display of sexism, but it's sexism.
Another way to think about it: Traditional thoughts about gender construct a set of Man Traits and a set of Woman Traits. Some Man Traits are generally seen as good (strong, athletic), some are generally seen as bad (angry, violent). Same for the Woman Traits (motherly versus ditzy, let's say). Not every man, of course, is going to embody all the Man Traits; but he still has to conform to them, or be called a sissy, a wussy, a girl, a weirdo, or worse. That's incredibly harmful. We have an entire society set up telling people essentially that they can't be who they are, unless who they are fits into this very narrow construct of what we think they should be.
So yeah. I do think that people generally buy into the Man-Woman Trait package, or they don't. And yes, it's harmful.
