Collecting and decorating with antique rugs is also understanding a delicate balance between fine art for the floor, and practicality for use and longevity.
Invariably the question often arises: How practical is it to walk on an antique carpet for which the value is in the thousands of dollars.
A finely woven hand knotted carpet is intended to last for generations upon generations provided it has, and in fact continues to be, cared for appropriately.
Simple ways to ensure your antique rug may be enjoyed and last for generations to come goes as follows:
- Rotate the carpet seasonally.
- If the carpet is located in a higher traffic area, avoid walking upon it with shoes. Walking upon a fine wool carpet is actually proven over time to increase the luster and sheen of the pile.
However, there are antique rugs and carpets which are more appropriately suited for decorative purposes. A fine antique carpet for which the fibers used in constructing the pile are of silk would be considerably better suited for use as a wall hanging. In the collector world, there is significant demand for fine antique silk rugs and carpets, although practicality diminishes a great deal - which is why the most wise choice for an antique carpet which will actually serve utility would be one where the pile and foundation material are wool and cotton.
Our vote for the most enduring, classic and traditional design antique rugs and carpets goes to Kerman rugs - semi antique and antique. Kerman rugs have a timeless appeal - beautiful deep colors, rich cochineal dyes, and an overall tone which can be found neutral in tone and upbeat - A true pleasure to design a room around. Especially unusual is the incredibly large sizes these carpets may be found in. With the finer examples, you will find a tight weave, superior dyes, high grade wool and pleny of pile, Kerman rugs from the 1920's through the 1950's are among the most elegent and classic carpets in existance. For true antique rugs, Kerman rugs from the 1860's through the early 1900's offer an even more unique and exclusive decorative value.

Why have the front doors on my one year old antique buffet appear faded with no shine when the rest is fine?
I bought an antique oak buffet about a year ago. At the time it was dark and shiny. WIthin the past few months I've noticed that the two front doors have lost their shine and even appear faded with a slight white coloring. I did a thumnail test and can scrape some of the build up off. It appears as though the wood below the build up is shinier and dark. I did try a tinted wax paste, which really shined up my piece, but no luck on the doors. Is this wax build up or deterioration??
Sound like the doors were finished either at a different time, or with a different color lot than the rest of the item. Or the doors were refinished, but not the rest of the buffet. Or maybe the doors are off another buffet. I would think the only way to fix it would be to refinish the whole thing, but this would ruin any resale value as an antique.
I would talk to a good custom cabinet shop about this. This is a very technical question, and someone with many years of experience is needed. Don't go to some punk kid that works for help Home Depot or the like; do go to a real cabinet shop.
