Unique Vodka Cocktail Recipes
If you could check liquor cabinets around the US, you'd probably find a bottle of vodka right in the front. It's the option of choice for anyone who loves to make vodka cocktail recipes as it's the preferred spirits base for most cocktails – it's practically tasteless, crystal clear and has no discernable perfume of its own. It assumes the flavors of whatever is added to it in a cocktail. Vodka can be distilled from almost anything and accounts for almost a quarter of all distilled spirits used today.
It's been around for centuries - the first vodka for which there is documented evidence was way back (before the Internet) in the year 988. The ruling Grand Prince of Kiev learned that the laws of Islam forbade the consumption of alcohol in any form – so the Prince became a Christian!
Enough history.
Today, vodka is made by fermenting and distilling grain – although potatoes and beets are also popular. It's what's called a "rectified" spirit, meaning it goes through three distillation processes after which it is filtered. And it's ready to use right away! Most vodkas are 40% alcohol but there is a big difference between the brands. The less expensive ones tend to burn in the mouth and throat, while the premium brands are smoother in texture or "mouth feel."
So when picking up your next bottle of vodka for creating your vodka cocktail recipes, try a bottle from the higher shelf in the liquor store – these are of a better quality than floor-level ones and will feel velvety smooth and mellow on your tongue. A good vodka makes all the difference whether you mix it for drinks which are spicy, sweet or tart. Your vodka cocktail recipes deserve the best quality vodka you can get.
We're all familiar with Screwdrivers, Black Russians and Bloody Mary cocktails but there are hundreds more vodka cocktail recipes, using some really off-the-wall ingredients and flavors – try this one out on your friends; Minty Chocolate Vodka! Three-quarters of an ounce EACH of good vodka, white cream of chocolate and green cream of mint. Pour it all into a cocktail shaker – then pour over crushed ice into a well-chilled shot glass and garnish with a mint sprig. So velvety smooth, you'll want to make a pitcher of them!
How about using some fresh berries to build a shakerful of party drinks - this lovely libation is too good to miss and you must add it to your personal collection of vodka cocktail recipes. First, use a muddler to bruise a handful of fresh raspberries in your cocktail shaker – don't squish them too much. Then, add three ounces of vodka, two ounces fresh-squeezed orange juice, two ounces of cranberry juice and some orange zest which you can get at your grocery store (you can make your own by carefully grating the outside of an orange because you don't want any of the bitter white pith underneath). Shake it together; add a good splash or two of raspberry liqueur for color and taste - and the juice of one freshly squeezed lime. Shake it once more, pour it over ice into well-chilled Collins glasses and dress them up with another fresh raspberry.
Your friends will ask you what's in it – although the raspberry should provide a clue. There is a name for this cocktail I believe, but it's probably not appropriate to add it here!
Here's another vodka cocktail recipe which you may want to keep to yourself – but share it with friends around the pool on a warm sunny day. This is called a Melon Coconut Sensation and it deserves its own place in your library of vodka cocktail recipes because it is delicious. If you make up a shaker of these, be aware that at least one of your guests is going to end up precipitously in the pool!
To build your Melon Coconut Sensation, you'll need about five ounces of pineapple juice to which you add three ounces of good vodka. Now add about an ounce each of melon liqueur and coconut rum liqueur and pour over crushed ice in a chilled Collins glass. A slender slice of melon which you bend into a curve and skewer around a chunk of pineapple finishes it off!
This next vodka cocktail recipe was especially created to enjoy on one of those early fall days, when it's crisp and sunny with a hint of chill to come. Here's how you make a Sweet Apple Vodka Cocktail – put four slices of fresh ginger in your cocktail shaker, top with two good bar-spoons of fine sugar and the juice of half a fresh lime. Bruise them together with your muddler and add about six ounces of apple juice which you can squeeze fresh in your juicer – plenty of apples around in early fall. Next, you pour in about two ounces of Bison vodka and one ounce of apple schnapps liqueur. Shake it well and strain into your chilled Collins glasses over crushed ice. As a masterful finish, grind a little nutmeg (not too much) on the top and hang a slice of fresh rosy-skinned apple on the edge of the glass. Simply delicious!
You're creative are you not? Most fruits, herbs and spices can come together in a variety of vodka cocktail recipes and it's easy to invent your own, using ingredients you are already buying at the grocery store. Consider picking up some flavored syrups while you're there and visit the liquor store as well to scout out all the different varieties and flavors of vodkas which are available. And, while you're there, you might pick up a couple of bottles of liqueurs such as the melon liqueur – and a mint liqueur. Try them yourself at home; mix them with other fresh ingredients which you think would marry well. Then award yourself a Certificate of Excellence for creating vodka cocktail recipes and be sure to save your recipes on your hard drive because your friends will want them too.
