Make Your Own Wooden Chess Board - A Quick Guide for Learners
In India, the birth place of chess, a single set can involve over one hundred hours of labour from a master wood turner. Whether it is a ornate chess set or a traditional Staunton Chess piece, undertaking to build your own wooden chess set will mean time consuming and demand all of your patience. And yet, the satisfaction is going to pay dividends.
Chess has an attractive quality. So much so, that children and adults who never play chess will non-the-less go out and spend a lot of money just to have a chess set in their home. Chess sets are timeless and the sheer number of chess sets available attests to their enduring character.
To go in to every detail of how to create your own wooden chess set would require a book. I am just going to give you, what I hope is, the will, the basic needs and desire to complete your own wonderful chess set project.
Tips on Making Your Wooden Chess Pieces. To start with, you are going to need a scroll saw for your wooden chess pieces and, if you can obtain it, a mini lathe. Many of these things can be sourced form your local wood turning group. It's worth belonging to one of these groups for your wood working endeavour. A wood turning group is going to put you in touch with seasoned craftsman who will be able to direct you in your work.
It's not important what design you go for. It's hard to go past a good Staunton Chess piece, but what is absolutely necessary is that you determine early on, the style of the chess pieces you are hoping to create.
Uniformity in weight and design is the key. A sensible place to begin is a book I highly recommend entitled, "Wooden Chess Sets you can Make", by Diana L. Thompson. The book is easy to follow and has complete designs for 9 kinds of sets.
The Chess Board. You'll find several options here, some more complicated than others. It is possible to buy prepared inlaid wood. It's thin and when laid properly (like Linoleum), will not warp or crease over time.
Marquetry (small wooden squares, individually placed) is beautiful, but something you might want to tackle after you have already prepared and made a few chess boards. You are going to need the tools above, plus a router.
The important thing here is again, uniformity. But you also need to make up your mind before hand the size of the chess squares. The size of the board is secondary. Your squares need to be made to fit the chess pieces you have elected to make. As a general rule, the chess squares should allow for 5-10mm on all sides of the largest base (usually the base of the king). So, if the base width of your king is 4cm, you are going to aim for chess squares of 4.5-5.5cm.
Selecting Timber for your Chess Set. There are selected timbers that will work and kinds of wood that won't. It's that simple. Wood that splinters easily (pine wood, pacific maple wood) is not the best choice for your chess pieces. The usual woods are going to be Pallissandre, White Maple, Boxwood, Rosewood, Sheesham and Ebony . They are going to cost you, but the cost is well worth it.
The wood you select for the chess board can be any of the above plus wengue, maple, walnut and mahogany. The place to go is a trustworthy wood turner or fine wooden furniture Cabinet Maker.
Selecting a wooden chess set all depends on your taste of wood, the quality you hope to achieve, and your budget.
In all of this we are only just beginning. I recommend you buy an instruction book that is easy to understand, learn the techniques and then get to work on your first wooden chess set.
Designing your own chess set should be creative and fun, as well as demanding. It should create an air of mystery about the game of chess. Many chess sets have been carefully made using strange materials as well as precious woods from ordinary folk. And it is often these chess sets that turn out to be a well loved possession for generations to come.
