How to Fix Your Oak Skirting Boards
Fixing the oak skirting boards is not as easy as it is often made to appear. Far from just ensuring proper angular mitre cuts, it involves plenty of precision and high level of accuracy. Here are some tips to help you fix your boards just like a professional.
A brief overview of oak skirting boards
Typically, these boards camouflage gaps present between walls and the floor. Therefore, their primary function is to protect the plaster on the walls from impacts and damages. There are numerous profiles that popular oak skirting boards are available in these days. The depths of these boards can vary anywhere from 3 inches to as much as even 12 inches. The deeper versions of boards can be tough to cut as most regular saws can support cutting depths only till 8 inches. Thus, if you use a conventional mitre saw it may not work for boards that are over 8 inches in depth. If your interiors have low ceilings then it may not be a good idea to fix oak skirting boards that are too deep. It will make the room appear smaller.
How to deal with external corners
Typically, most oak skirting boards have internal corners. However, in some situations, there maybe external corners present as well. This can happen when there are chimney breasts or similar objects located in the room. In order to tackle external corners, you need to use specialised mitre saws to cut the corners at 45 degree angle. If you were to visit an old house, you would find the external corners being in a round shape. These would also have a wooden beading on the edge. This used to be a very conventional practice in the earlier days. If your oak skirting boards have this kind of a round corner, simply use a regular mitre saw to make it a square corner. Then use a filler to plug the remaining gap.
How to treat internal corners
If your oak skirting boards happen to have an internal corner, then try placing one skirting piece to another. Then take a pencil to trace one board’s profile onto the other piece. Then use cut offs to inscribe the profile onto the board’s reverse side. This can be a more convenient method for many people. You need to ensure that your hands remain steady during the cutting and fixing process. This way, your boards will have good fits.
How to fix the oak skirting boards
Once you have cut the oak skirting boards as per the required size you need to fix them in place. Using grab adhesives are the best alternative. These work best when you intend varnishing or staining the boards in future. If you are planning to stick the board to the wall, just nail it onto the stud. If you have a brick wall, you can place wood wedges inside gaps located between bricks. Then, simply nail the oak skirting boards into the wedge.

Someone offered to clean off the roof of one room on our house that is flat and collects leaves and acorns from our live oak tree. When it rains heavy & the roof is full, it will leak in one corner. Hubby use to climb that ladder and walk all over the roof. Not safe for him or I to do that anymore. That was so nice for someone to ask if we would like him to do that for us. I stood by the door until he came out and he looked up at me with tears in his eyes telling me he couldn't thank me enough for the favor I did for him and his wife. He shook my hand and left. A few minutes later he came up to me and thanked me again and told me he knew I was a good man when he saw me and that God had placed me there at the right time for he didn't know what he would have done if it weren't for my kindness. Well, I was kind of embarrassed because I didn't think what I had done was that special but it sure made me feel good to know I had helped someone who so appreciated it.
