Building Desk Designs: How To Ensure A Successful Project

Desk designs are most commonly the first furniture item to be tackled in a personal or professional work space renovation. If you are an experience woodworker or perhaps simply enjoy the craft, constructing a custom office furniture piece is not as difficult as it may sound if you have the right information. Follow the steps below to ensure a successful desk project.

Location: Decide on the location of the custom office furniture piece within the room. If you have a visual mind, you should be able to determine the approximate scale of the new desk. It is good idea though to take a few measurements to make sure you know the overall size limitations.

Design: The design of the desk or desk armoire is largely based on personal needs, aesthetic preference and size restrictions. Ask yourself the following:

  • How much working space do you need? You could have a basic rectangle shape, an l-shape, a u-shape or a basic desk with a credenza along the back.
  • Do you have a desktop computer or laptop? Do you need space for a printer or other equipment?
  • Do you need drawer space, or additional desk shelves (also known as a hutch)?
  • Do you need a keyboard tray?

Material: Desk designs can be constructed with various different materials. Solid wood desks seem to be the most popular choice as they can be stained pretty much any color and are extremely durable, although often a little heavy. Desks built from plywood or particle board are lighter in weight and can be laminated or painted. Glass tables are often quite modern looking. The table tops are usually made of glass and combined with wood or metal legs. Fiberglass is another option that can look very modern but this material requires more experience from the builder than other materials do.

Desk Plan: Building from a set of detailed and concise computer desk plans is the key to constructing a custom office furniture piece with success. A good set of desk plans will provide you with plan views, sections, details, a material list and often a step-by-step reference guide.

Level of Difficulty: If you are new to furniture construction be sure to select a plan that is designed to meet your level of experience. Although a good set of building plans should allow anyone to build from them, it is important to make sure the methods needed to complete the design can be achieved.

i have a tan sectional cherry wood --
end tables, dinning table, and armoire
cranberry red accents what color should i choose for my walls?
oh i forgot i have a lot of family photos i want to display on one wall. http://www.target.com/gp/detail.html/ref=huc_ic_1_txt/602-9877120-7630229?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B000XRKYT2&nodeID=&merchantID=A1VC38T7YXB528
what color frame should i use?

play around with the Sherwin Williams color visualizer to find something that you like. It is the best paint visualizer on the web, imho. I like how their color palette is laid out, I like that you can search by color family & color name, the "painted" rooms look the most realistic, and it suggests coordinating color schemes. You can literally spend hours:

I think a pale violet like "iris petal" (# 7756) will open up the room, give it a modern feel + highlight your cranberry & cherry accents.

As for picture frames, I would choose a cherry wood or black would be fine.
