Why Growing Table Grapes In A Greenhouse Is Good For Cold Winter Areas
The northern parts of the globe are colder than areas down south. While the southern regions have difficulty growing grapes because of their hot climates and arid conditions, growing table grapes in these areas is not as hard as growing them in the northern regions. This is because the parched seasons of the south can be counteracted by constantly watering the growing table grapes. In the north however, the climate can get chilly and damage table grapes to the extent of affecting the quality of the harvests as well as the numbers of grapes a grower can harvest. Thus, experts advise growing table grapes within a greenhouse.
A greenhouse is not just a house that is painted green. It is not even an ordinary building. In actuality, a greenhouse is a structure that is specifically built to contain the heat of the sun and magnify it many times more so that the plants grown within it will still enjoy the sun's rays without being exposed to the harsh conditions outside. The structure is capable of doing so because it is made up of a plastic or glass roof and plastic or glass walls that easily heat up even with limited sun exposure. The sun's rays then pass through a greenhouse's roof and walls and get trapped within it.
Growing table grapes in a greenhouse is a very smart choice especially if you live in the northern parts of the world. As long as there is winter in your area of residence or the cold season lasts longer than the warm season, a greenhouse is the best place that you can grow table grapes. Not only will a greenhouse maximize the limited availability of sunlight and deliver the sun's rays to the plants, but it will also heat up the ground within and near its structure. Damage to your table grapes through winter frost exposure will no longer be a lingering fear among grape growers like you.
For a greenhouse to get the most out of the sun, it should be positioned on land that gets much sunlight. Look for an area of your land which you think you will most likely be growing your table grapes in. This area should be an open space with no nearby trees or structures that could hamper the sun's rays from directly hitting the greenhouse. Constructing a greenhouse just beside your house or underneath tall trees will render the structure's purpose useless since it will not be getting much sunlight.
Also, you should make sure that the area where you are going to place a greenhouse gets more sun exposure in the morning than in the afternoon. Photosynthesis in table grapes and any other plant best occurs in the morning when the sun gives out high intensity light. The intensity of the sun's light fades away as the day progresses which is why it is important to appropriately place your greenhouse in an area that is best exposed to the morning sunlight.
If the temperature is extremely cold outside of a greenhouse, supplemental heating may be needed so you can continue growing grapes in it. This can be done by installing a thermostat within a greenhouse. Of course, you should also avoid excessively warming up the greenhouse because it can also be bad for the table grapes that you are growing.
The winter may make it difficult for you to grow table grapes in your garden. Constructing a greenhouse will make it much easier for you. By growing grapes in a greenhouse, your grapes will be better protected from the winter frost and you can expect a better grape yield even if you live far up north.
