Derrigimlagh Bog - The Most Modern Bog in the World? The Centre of Modern Technology in the World at the Turn of the Century.
Today, when travelling south of Clifden, County Galway in Ireland look out for Derrigimlagh Bog where you will find a scattering of concrete blocks and a few lengths of rusty chains, not much to look at but these are the sparse remains of the world’s first transatlantic radio station. It was constructed by the radio pioneer, Guglielmo Marconi - a huge complex to house capacitors, receivers and accomodation for 150 staff. The station opened in 1907 and operated for nine years forwarding messages across the Atlantic from London and Dublin. Guglielmo Marconi was the second son of Giuseppe Marconi, an Italian landowner and his Irish wife, Ann Jameson, granddaughter of the founder of the Jameson Whiskey Distillery. Derrigimlagh Bog also contains the spot where John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown landed after successfully completing the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic. They had taken off from St. John’s in Newfoundland in a converted Vickers Vimy bomber biplane powered by twin Rolls Royce engines, completing the 1,900 mile (3,000km) journey in sixteen hours and twelve minutes. The flight had been treacherous, their transmitter froze not long after take-off and they had to fly for long periods at three hundred feet to prevent ice from forming. Several times, Brown had to clamber out onto the wings to chip ice away. The first thing they spotted on the Irish mainland were the aerials of Marconi’s radio station, they came into land supposing the ground to be firm but nosedived spectacularly into the famous Derrigimlagh Bog.

What was France like socially, politically and economically at the turn of the 20th century?

Well, the French government/ society changed in a big way when they lost the Franco-Prussian War 1870. In that year the really old fashioned '2nd Empire' ended, and the kind of out of date/ goofy 'emperor' Napoleon III was swept out. France became a 'republic' again 1871, it was called the '3rd Republic' 1870-1940. The big thing up through 1900 was a really nasty 'split' in French society. About half of the people were 'rightest', wanting to go back in time to the period of emperors, kings, and aristocrats. The other half were 'leftists' wanting the republic, equality, a democracy, and even socialism. The 3rd Republic accommodated both sides but satisfied neither. The 2 sides splitting the French were always at each others throats, just barely held back by rules, laws, and the law and order of the 3rd Republic. Despite this really bad split, France made a lot of modern progress 1870-1900, industry went way up, up to date inventions came on line, wealth went up, but France (due to a later start) could not match either Britain or Germany in these same areas.
1894-1906 France suffered a big set back in a huge government/ social scandal, that found the 'rightest' side, cheating/ breaking the law and maybe even being in league with France's arch enemy Germany. It was the 'Watergate' scandal of the day, and called the 'Dreyfus Affair'.
Many French military officers and government officials of the 'rightest' side were found to be way too old for office, senile, incompetent and disloyal passing on or allowing to be passed on, French military secrets to Germany..in return for pay, retaining their VIP status in France, and German help in defeating the French 'leftist' side. When they were discovered they picked out a Jewish officer (Alfred Dreyfus) to be a scapegoat and blame and frame for everything they had done. Falsely blaming 'the Jews' for anything the rulers and tyrants in Germany and Russia did, was at the time a favorite tactic of the German and Russian dictatorships. It's use in France exploded the whole split of the French between leftist democrats/ socialists, and rightest dictators/ military. Dreyfus was eventually cleared.... the democratic/ republic side won, but the French generals/ military/ those wanting the return of 'kings' and dictators went away mad, and took the grudge match right into WWI starting 1914.
