The Background Of Victorian Architecture In Canada
Homes are often portrayed as Victorian, but that isn't really a style. From 1835 and 1900 there were many kinds of construction built and 'Victorian' architecture describes them all. There are common features to look out for, but with the plethora of styles used it is hard to say it is a particular style. The buildings are constructed in brick, stone, and timber, using a sometimes-eclectic mixture of Classical and Gothic motifs.
The most remarkable type of Victorian architecture anywhere in Ontario was the home. All types of home, from the urban town property to the large country farm have been touched by this decorative style and solid craftsmanship. When builders looked at the design of homes, they looked to patterns, frills and swirls to create that Victorian elegance. These decorations were not necessarily enjoyed by everyone, with some Europeans feeling that the designs were over the top and too complex. The end result looked good, regardless of the fact that there were completely distinct architectural styles over the years.

Today's builders build properties that leave little to the imagination, with buildings looking the same as the neighbouring construction with little to distinguish between them, unlike the builders of Toronto's first suburbs. To start with, property planners wanted land and that was found north of Queen and west of Parliament, where land had been cleared in the 1830's for farming. These empty ‘park lots' would in the course of time house the residences of some of York's (as Toronto was formerly known) most prominent officials.
The first examples of Toronto Victorian architecture were farm houses and some cottages. Land subdivided into a grid design of streets by John Howard, were the first building lots to be marketed in 1845. The narrow pieces of land of only 15 to 20 foot in width, made the most reasonable house the terraced (row or attached homes). There is a home on Sherbourne street which didn't conform to the usual house build; that was Allandale which is found at number 241 and is a rather elaborate Victorian example. The residence flaunts a large rustic porch, with an elaborate trim and two-toned decorative brick work; the owner being Enoch Turner, the brewer, who had it built in the late 1840's. Away from Sherbourne street there is another fine example of early Victorian style, this time at 424 Ontario Street - the property featuring an ornate gingerbread trim on the peaks and porches.

Can brass plated steel be Victorian? is it safe to darken the brass without damaging the plating?
I have bought some 'Victorian' brass stair rods. One of the finials fell off the end and the rod is a hollow tube of steel that has a thin brass plating. Is this a Victorian construction? seemed a bit unlikely to me. Any advice would be appreciated.
The second part of my question is how to darken the brass when it is only a thin brass plating? all the methods I have seen are for solid brass.
Well, they certainly could have made those plated rods during the Victorian era, the technology is nothing new. I don't know anyway to give you a definitive answer on this. On the darkening, I would just do the normal method, the brass is really bonded with the steel. First test it on a small section.
